I just finished Appleseed, by Shirowe before GITS, it's a fun read and only 4 volumes. The second season is also great but not as good as the first. The first season still has a very interesting and highly relevant narrative with the villain being a terrorist exploiting social memetics to spontaneously generate the attacks. Stand Alone Complex is extremely good, too, but as a TV series it's more lightweight and focused on the action. it's a lot closer to Jin-roh or Patlabor 2 than GITS1). In goes in to more detail and digs deeper into the existential complexities of the narrative, indulging more in Oshii's standard style of filmmaking (i.e. >258 Watch Innocence if the thematic concepts interested you in the film or if you've seen Oshii's other films and are a fan of his work.
